One of my son’s friends is wise beyond his years. I realised when I had a chat with him some time ago that he and I share the same views about growing older. I remember he told me that age is just a number, people are people however old they are, and that he always treats people the same as they treat him.
Yes, age is but a number. We can tell ourselves we are old, or stay young at heart, it’s up to us. I’m 58, but in my head do not feel any different than when I was 28. One person I know has chronic backache, but is only 50 years old. She has given up and doesn’t try exercising and stretching to help herself fight it at all. She uses two sticks, a stair lift, and sits in an armchair all day. She looks and dresses like an old woman. On the other hand my 91 year old mother fights her many co-morbidities, goes out with her walking frame, and forces herself to get on the bus every Friday and go shopping. She refuses to sit in a wheelchair or let me help her with her housework, and cooks and cleans for herself. I can only admire her grit and determination not to let life get her down. I know that if she could, she would be joining the young-at-heart cyclists in the photo below…
I have had my share of bad health. I’m currently waiting to find out at the end of January whether I need any more treatment for thyroid cancer. However, it doesn’t stop me from looking ahead and booking holidays or tickets for the Isle of Wight music festival that we always go to in June. It’s nice to go to the festival, walk about with people half my age, and forget that I’m a cancer sufferer. My husband tells me that we mustn’t say ‘What if?’ or sit at home waiting to die, because then we’d never do anything or go anywhere at all!
Do you feel younger than your years? Quite a lot of people I know do. As far as I can tell it seems that we age faster on the outside than on the inside. What do you think?

You’re right.. On the outside… I’m 70 but while driving along listening to the music of the 50’s era, when growing up, I revert in my mind back to the young girl/woman I was … When reminiscing or looking at photos I feel some of those times again… When I look in the mirror; yes I see that on the outside I am a senior, but inside is quite a different story… We are the composite now of so many different ages that are inside our mind and heart, just waiting to be remembered! My mothers thighs tried escaping the leg of my knickers! That made me do everything to stay young and get fit. I have a thread linked to my youth and every now and then I give it a huge tug. Yes I am as mad as a box of frogs but I am more than a number ‘ I AM ME’.
Thank you ps. I’ll be back 😇😇😇😇

I do feel younger than my years…about 28 sounds right 🙂 So much of aging is about attitude. I hope you receive only good news about your health at your next visit. Keep your spirits up – it lays the groundwork for healing. Happy holidays and my best to you. 🙂

Always love finding a group of like-minded people! …though I am “older” than you….body 68 More like you in mind…adult of indeterminate age…and spirit…ageless and eternal. I, too, admired my mother who never got “set in her ways,” so was youthful in thought, hung out with people of all ages and always felt young in spirit. At the end, ravaged with cancer she would plunk a wig on her head, brush snow off her car, and with a look of pure determination take on the world. Until this year, I too, didn’t feel my age at all…now if I spend the day bent over gardening or rolling out Christmas Cookies my body tells me there is a consequence to aging in stiffness and some pain in my knee, but I will never let that stop me from adding new plants to the garden or creating something for my family. This year, I was also diagnosed with a chronic health issue that we are figuring out as I write this. So, to all connected here…Many wishes for the Happiest of Holidays and Blessed Good Health in the year to come!

We DO seem to age faster in body than in spirit. In my mind, I’m still in my twenties. My fingers tell me a different story as I type this response, LOL.
I’m so sorry to hear about your health problems. Sending positive thoughts your way that your cancer is GONE for good.

Stevie, My mother in law used to say she was shocked when she looked in the mirror and now I know what she meant. I haven’t the faintest idea what age I really am. I know what age my body is and I try to take good care of it. Because my body is my vehicle to carry around this being who is ageless.
So, keep feeding the ageless being all the experiences it needs to thrive and take good care of the vehicle in 2016. Wishing you very good health and loads of interesting and happy days.

I agree. I’m a cancer survivor and I take nothing for granted but like you I look forward and take responsibility for keeping as fit as possible. I’m 59, so 2016 will be a big birthday, but getting older sure beats the alternative. And also like you, I don’t feel older on the inside. I think I’m about 34. 🙂 I do wish you all the best for a full recovery and remember you don’t have to be brave and positive all the time. Here’s to 2016. Cheers and good health or Slainte Mhath as we say up here.
