This week on the Open Book Blog Hop the question is: ‘What to do if you’ve failed at the goals you set?’

I found out long ago that setting goals can often lead to disappointment.  At age 16 I was all set to become a doctor, until I realised a year or so later that with my poor grasp of Maths, Physics and Chemistry, that goal would be forever unattainable.  The job I did for four years after leaving school to compensate really brought home to me that my talents were definitely not for the sciences. I learned it was time to change tack and find a job I was good at.  I loved books, reading, writing, and music.  I worked my way up the library hierarchy to eventually be in charge of buying L.P’s and cassettes, and it suited me much better.

Nowadays I avoid setting goals in order to live a stress-free life.  I could never take part in the NaNoWriMo novel writing month, as I’d be so concerned about finishing it in time that I’d rush the story.  The older I get the more laid back I’ve become; life is too short to spend time worrying about not accomplishing something you’ve set your heart on.  I’m of the opinion that yes, I’ll work hard at trying to get what I want, but if it doesn’t happen then it’s not going to be the end of the world.  I often take stock of what I do have: A lovely family, reasonably good health, and the chance to write in peace all day which augments my income in a way that being a medical secretary never did; people actually pay to read something I’ve written, and that’s good!

My youngest son is so laid back that he’s almost comatose.  He has a wonderful musical talent which he’s put on the back burner for a few years to do something he loves more – being with his children.  It suits him, he’s happy, and the boys love him to bits.

So the moral of the tale is…don’t set goals.  Live each day as it comes, and what will be will be.  If I’m going to end up a bestselling author then fine; if not, then I’ll sit at my desk and carry on enjoying writing stories.  I’m taking time out to smell the roses in the late summer of my life, and from where I’m sitting the aroma is heavenly.
