I learned another thing from our holiday with Sam’s sister and her husband last week:
Vicky and Jim arrived in a brand new motorhome (very similar to the one in the featured image), and we were invited in to have a look. It certainly has all the mod-cons; cooker, carpeting, foldaway table, microwave, TV, shower, chemical toilet and central heating. In fact it has everything we have in our holiday home except for one thing – space. When the double bed was folded down then it became a little too cosy for me, to the effect that even the proverbial swinging feline might protest!
I tried to imagine what I’d feel like with two of us in the motorhome when all the blinds were down at night, the double bed down, and the door locked. It didn’t take me long to realise I’d probably feel claustrophobic and want to unlock the door and run screaming outside. Echoes of lying encased under the tomography machine sprung to mind. Strangely Sam was of the same opinion when we discussed it later on.
Vicky and Jim can travel all over the countryside, park up where they want to, and enjoy new places and adventures. However, there would be about 12 hours where they would be shut in the van, hardly able to move about. Sam and I were of the same opinion that if we travelled to new places, then we’d rather stay in a hotel. We enjoy going to our holiday home and being able to move around or even sit in different rooms if we want to. With all its clever gadgets and mod-cons, we both quickly learned that a brand new motorhome is not for us.
What would you rather do? Travel and see the sights in a somewhat cramped motorhome with all the latest gadgets, or make several visits per year to a comparatively spacious holiday home such as our one depicted below? I’d be interested to read your comments. Working tomorrow – back on Friday.

I wouldn’t handle a motorhome well. One of us would end up dead and they wouldn’t find the body!! Having said that, we had a boat for a few years and went out on it weekends and holidays, exploring the west coast of Canada which was fun. It was almost like a holiday house on the water or a floating motorhome in a way. The quarters were cramped but we stopped a lot and being on the water was relaxing so I managed. We both lived to tell the tales.

We enjoyed a canal boat trip recently and saw houseboats dotted along the canal. Don’t think I could live on a houseboat, but liked the one-off trip.

I love the idea of traveling all over but I agree with you on the claustrophobia issue.

I’d also go for the holiday home, especially now I know where yours is!

Owning a motorhome is one of those unfulfilled dreams. If I was single it’s something I might consider. But I agree with you that it would be a bit claustrophobic for two people. The problem with a holiday home – something else we’ve considered – is that you are kind of stuck with having to take most of your holidays in the same place. We like to try new places so hotels/B&Bs are our preference.

We like the summer at the holiday home, but do travel to other places during the other months, staying in hotels though!

They both appeal to me, for very different reasons. The motor home would enable me to travel and see so many things, which would be worth being squashed. And a holiday home like yours, for those times when peace and quiet are needed.
If I could only have one, peace and quiet would win every time!
