I must quote the actor Richard Gere on his thoughts about ageing. Mr Gere embraced Buddhism some years ago, and at 68 is ageing rather nicely if I may say so…
“I am old but I am forever young at heart. We are always the same age inside. Know that you are the perfect age. Each year is special and precious, you can only live it once. Do not regret growing older, it’s a privilege denied to many!”
What sense he talks! Yes, however much we grow older on the outside, we never age inside. I feel the same inside as I did at 25, isn’t it weird?
What I do regret are the aches and pains of ageing, not the wisdom and insight that time gives us. What I’d really like is to keep my 60 year old brain and transport it onto a 20 year old body, but then again I expect that’s what the majority of middle-agers will say. Ageing comes at a price – the joints and muscles complain sometimes, but hey, we know what to do about it. We’ve got to keep it all moving and make every effort to get out of our armchairs…
Mr Gere, thanks for those words of encouragement. I view every day as a bonus, as without treatment I wouldn’t have made it past 50 years of age. I’ve had 13 extra years so far, and have got to know my rather delightful grandchildren. Perhaps we can meet for tea and crumpets one day and talk about life? Just leave me your email address in the comments and I’ll be right in touch…

My mother is turning 80 this year, Stevie, and she is also a cancer survivor. She is incredible and is so active and involved. She doesn’t take much medication either, just pain killers when she has the odd arthritis attack and the on-going breast cancer medication.

She sounds as though she’s doing everything right. It’s no good us sitting at home feeling sorry for the cards we’ve been dealt. Cancer can happen to anybody. I just take thyroxine and get on with life as best I can.

Ageing happens to everyone in the end. It’s how they deal with it that matters.

Those words of Mr Gere’s are so true. “To think, I did all that/ And may I say, not in a shy way …” (The words of Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka, voiced by Frank Sinatra.)

Men improve with age if they keep themselves fit and Don’t die their hair jet black! But they can go down hill fast and then we women feel we are ageing better. My knee has recovered from an undiagnosed handicap – it is great to be walking properly again. It is probably my punishment for being impatient when stuck behind those who are slower and older or for gloating when son said his parents-in-law (exactly our age ) stayed in when it snowed while we made the perilous walk to the cliff tops. I paid for that when reduced to working out how on earth to get on and off the bus!

How many times have we all felt the same impatience when younger and stuck behind a slow elderly walker or driver? I now realise it’ll be me in a few years’ time and think a little bit differently…

I was digging around for change in my purse at the grocery store the other day as people behind me waited and I thought, oh no, now I’m doing it!

To avoid being annoying I always have my bus pass ready ( ‘bus pass lite’ I like to think of it, earned from a life time of using the buses not through age! ) only to realise too late I have my Nationwide card in my hand – twice I’ve done that.

So true! It is true he is ageing well. Some have better genes than others but life is always good if you make it so.

Much as I love and admire Richard Gere, he is obviously one of the lucky ones. (not blessed with arthritic bones and similar problems!)

I’m almost 68 but the degrees with which Mr Gere ages and the degrees with which I age make me think he has a Dorian Grey mirror somewhere.
