Someone in a Government office has come up with a surefire way to collect more revenue. They’re going to charge drivers of the most polluting cars coming into Central London an extra £12.50 each day on top of the congestion charge.
Will it stop people driving into London? No, it won’t. People need to get to work, and they cannot rely on public transport these days. Some commuters do not possess two new Jaguar cars like that infamous MP, and use their trusty runaround which might not be as young as it used to be, but it gets them there. Now they have to pay the price for not being able to afford a newer car.
All cars are pollutants. The money raised won’t stop people breathing in exhaust fumes as they walk about in Central London. The only way to make the air cleaner is to ban traffic from the city centre altogether. But of course this will never happen, because there’ll be no money made from it.
You can just see where this is going, can’t you? Workers in cash-strapped councils will be rubbing their collective hands together at the chance to charge motorists who want to drive into their particular city. Drivers will have to take wheelbarrow loads of money out with them to get from A to B!
What do you think? Would you pay the extra charge, or use public transport?

You’re probably right. It’s a money grab. Also, I’m not sure how it works there, but in order to renew your driver’s licence annually here, if your car is more than a few years old, there will be a tick mark to fulfill an emissions test before applying for renewal. 🙂

What a good idea. We don’t have that here, but we have a Ministry of Transport (MOT) test that all cars over 3 years old have to undergo. Our drivers’ licences are valid until we are 70, and then we have to have regular medical tests after that.

Oh, that’s interesting. Ever 2 years we must renew our licence, which used to be free now costs money – I can’t remember how much, maybe $50? And aged 80 testing at the motor vehicle place with testing every 2 years. Plus we must pay a bogus tax really, every year must get a new sticker for our licence plate for $120!

Stealth taxes are everywhere these days. I’m sure it’s somebody’s job to think them up.

I would never drive in London, way to busy, for those that do though they are left with a difficult, expensive choice.. I’ve nominated you Stevie for a sunshine blogger award. Thanks for your support.

I don’t know which is worse, Stevie. I have used the fast train and tube to get into and around London. Exhausting! [fun for a day trip but to do it every day I mean] and I have driven to the airport (Heathrow) and seen the heavy traffic so that is not a great option either.

The best option is to move out of London I think!

In my case, there isn’t an issue. For me to get to London the only realistic way is public transport anyway. The way our transport system is set up, London is the easy place to set up a meeting because it’s the centre of the hub.
The problem with London is that it’s so huge and so many people just have to go there, they have no choice.

Very true. Public transport here in Suffolk isn’t the best, but now I’d rather live here than in London.

Oh too right
I always reckon the best sight in London is the north bound platform on Euston Station 🙂
