Alabama’s State Senate approved a bill by 25 votes to 6 to outlaw abortions in almost all cases except where a mother’s life is at risk.
The senators who approved the bill were all men. Surprise, surprise ….none of the 4 female senators backed the bill.
I felt quite angry when I read this on my BBC News app. Why are these men interfering with women’s rights? In my opinion a woman should be in control of her own body and have the right to terminate a pregnancy if she so wishes. Men have no idea of the thoughts and feelings a woman might have towards an unwanted foetus growing in her body. If men could give birth, how would they feel knowing there is an unwanted baby growing inside them, maybe due to rape, that they will have to curtail their career to bring up, and possibly also suffer financial hardship into the bargain?
Pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s body, which will never be the same after she has carried a baby. If that baby is wanted, then she will eagerly welcome the new arrival and carry the scars of pregnancy as a trophy. If the baby is unwanted and she is not allowed a termination, then she will either feel desperate enough to go somewhere else and have an abortion anyway, or feel depressed and resentful towards the baby and possibly its father as well. The baby might well be given up for adoption or taken into care, and therefore not have the best start in life.
Babies and toddlers can push parents to the limit. I know because I had to listen to my eldest son’s continual screaming for the best part of 3 years. I put up with it because he was wanted and loved. What might happen to that baby if its mother felt only resentment towards it? It doesn’t bear thinking about. Have these men spent day after day looking after a screaming baby? I think not.
Abortion should be seen as a fundamental human right. A foetus is not capable of independent life. If an unwanted pregnancy is allowed to progress to its natural end, then the resulting baby might not be loved by either parent at all, especially if it is the result of rape or incest. These male senators are not thinking straight! The female senators know what it’s all about and that’s why they’re not backing the ban. Somebody ought to educate these men…

The real argument is how long is over half the world’s population going to be legislated into second class citizenship by a system of patriarchal religious and politcal zealots. This is crazy. Beyond crazy.

Absolutely. Perhaps they ought to be made to undergo vasectomies, which can be reversed only if they want children…

The world is talking about this and it’s going to get worse as a few other ‘backward’ states are getting ready to jump on as soon as they hope the supreme court kills Roe V. Wade. It’s heinous! I’ve been rallying in political forums all day. The only way to turn this shit around is to get rid of the orange one who hijacked the Whitehouse! 2020 can’t come soon enough.

In Old Testament days, the law went something like this: You dropped it; you bought it.
So here we have two people, and let’s say for argument’s sake, one was a virgin, the other a rapist. There are and were, cultures that said you must marry who you impregnate. If more men were held accountable to that extent, there’d be no more rape.
As to the child: The heart is already beating by the time you suspect you might be pregnant. that unborn baby may grow up to cure cancer, or AIDS. Or maybe he might make some girl happy, who otherwise would have lived her life all alone. (See “It’s A Wonderful Life”)
What about the baby’s right to exist, to be alive, to enjoy life?
The rape question is important, but you know, most abortions have nothing to do with rape or incest.
Even in such cases, what did women do before abortion was possible? Many believed that God would see them through. I believe Fanny Crosby, that famous blind hymn-writer, was a product of rape.
I’m not saying, You got raped, and now you’re pregnant? Too bad for you. I’m empathetic, would do anything to help. But killing an unborn child wouldn’t make the rape go away. But like I said, most abortions have nothing to do with rape.
I’ve also raised two babies, and one of them was a screamer. They both had ADHD, while I struggled with undiagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Now, my ex-husband is my late ex-husband.
The only family I have are my kids, even if I don’t hear from them often.
I’m not pro-life because I was a great mom, or because I wanted to get pregnant. I’m pro-life because there are all kinds of ways to prevent conception today that didn’t exist back in the day, when a woman who was raped and got pregnant from it, had to live with it.
In fact, if you do get raped, or you make a bad choice the night before, you can get the morning after pill. Nowadays, there’s little excuse for unwanted pregnancy.
In addition, Hilary rodham Clinton wants to pass a bill stating that a woman can have an abortion anytime. Like, why in the hell would a woman want an abortion eight months into the pregnancy? She’s felt that baby kick. She’s seen the ultrasound pictures. She knows it’s alive. But the boyfriend left or the husband was found cheating.
I know that’s horribly devastating. But is it right to take it out on the baby?
Do you know what happens in an abortion: how in order to get the baby out, it comes out in parts? That’s right. Each developing arm and leg has to be suctioned out so there are no more baby parts in you.
Even a first-trimester D&C abortion involves flushing out the developing life with chemicals toxic to its skin.
Search the web for babies who survive abortion; hear their stories. Check out things from their point of view. Then let’s talk.

Thanks for your comment, but hey, we all have different opinions. I don’t believe a woman should have an abortion at 8 months though, and so I’m with you on that one. I just believe a woman has a right to say what happens to her own body. Men have this right already, so if we’re all equal now, why shouldn’t women?

Hi, Stevie.
It’s been a while since I’ve been on my site.
I hope you got through Covid okay, and you’re doing well.
As you say, everyone has their opinion. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same.

Perhaps they would also like all women to be veiled, not to have a vote, not express an opinion etc. It really makes me very angry!

Reblogged this on My Corner and commented:
This is in response to the Alabama legislature’s decision to ban abortions in the state unless the life of the mother is in danger. Rape is one thing, but when a woman chooses to have sex, not realizing or caring about the consequences and decides to end the life of an innocent child, that’s wrong. Life is precious, and birth control isn’t always effective. Babies don’t choose to be conceived or born, but unless the life of the fetus and/or mother is in danger, every fetus deserves a chance to live.
Stevie thinks Alabama’s male legislators need to be educated about what it’s like to be a woman with an unplanned pregnancy, but if anyone should be educated, it’s young people. The message they should be given is this. If you’re not ready to start a family, don’t have sex. If you get pregnant accidentally, either raise the child in the loving environment he/she deserves, or find the child a good home. If my mother decided to have an abortion in 1961, I wouldn’t be here.
Now that you know my view, read Stevie’s post. Then, you can let us both know what you think.

Here is a radical idea – every pregnant woman knows who is the father of the child she is carrying. Let’s have a law that gives the woman the right to insist the father brings up the child, with abortion as the alternative if he refuses. Time to start blaming and shaming the men.

I’m inclined to say that every woman should have the right to insist that the anti-abortion campaigners and the legislators who ban abortion raise the child. It’d be amazing how quickly the laws would change.

Absolutely. To make a woman have a baby she does not want would not be good for the woman or the baby. The legislators want to make a law on a subject they know nothing about.

I am shocked at such a backwards move in women’s rights, Stevie. I have always advocated that women have to keep fighting for their rights as there are a lot of men out there who would be delighted to see them curtained and reduced.
