Hi all. This is a scheduled post this week, as I’m currently away. The topic today is:
What is your preferred method of writing? (by hand, on a computer, dictate it?)
I usually outline the plot in longhand in a notebook first, where I also add details about all the characters. I find this helps if I become stuck with the story or can’t remember hair colour/eye colour etc, as I can then read my notes and know where to go next.
Once the plot has been put on paper, then it’s time to type each chapter up on the computer. I have an 8.5 x 5.5 template that I type straight on to. I used to type the story just in Word, but now I use the template. It saves on formatting bills. I never used to be able to line up all the page numbers properly on Word, but with my magic template, anything is possible, lol!
Due to the kind of job I do, I can type faster than I can write in longhand, so the computer is my preferred method of writing every time.

Interesting Stevie. As you know, I write my books and blogs in longhand first. I just don’t feel creative in front of screen, even though my typing is very fast too. 🙂 x

And I also said – say I’m looking for a bank robbery by amatuers caper, with some romantic tension. And small planes. There’s a cast party on my shoulder and they start talking. I try to keep up. Plans? Ummm….

Most everything goes on computer, but I keep a continuity log in long-hand for the fantasy series. It’s just too complicated not to have one and I found going back and forth between documents was annoying.

I have started writing character traits down in a notebook, but like you the computer wins out every time when it comes to actually writing the story.

Everything goes on the computer. Notes and all. I keep a folder for each WIP. It contains all the research notes, all the character notes and plot ideas. Then each chapter is a separate file in the folder until I bring them together into a first draft before revising to cr e ate drafts #2, #3, etc. Like Richard, my typing speed roughly matches my speed of thought. I never properly learned to touch type although I owned my first typewriter in the early ’80s and first computer in the mid ’80s.

I’m not a fast typist. I tried to teach myself back in the days of manual typewriters, but my little fingers are too short to reach the keys!

I learned to touch type back in 1994. It took a while to get my speed up, but now I can rattle along…
