Hi all, and welcome to this week’s Open Book Blog Hop. Today’s topic is:
Has the pandemic affected your writing? If so, how? Have your writing habits changed in reaction to the ‘different’ world we are faced with?
The weather was gorgeous over here in the East of England during the first lockdown, and I confess that I did not sit at my computer as much as I usually do. I was more interested in getting out in the sunshine after a long winter and walking around the fields and lanes surrounding my village.
However, during lockdown I did start and indeed finish a novel. ‘Barren’ was my lockdown baby, and with a bit of effort I managed to write over 50,000 words. You can read an excerpt below. I’m still waiting for reviews from the 11 people who have bought it so far, but as soon as I receive a review I’ll add it here.
Now we are in a second lockdown. The weather is not so good, and so I am more inclined to sit at my computer. I have started a new novel, and have written up to Chapter 7 so far.
Has the pandemic affected my writing? Er… not really, because I still only write when I want to. I’ll probably be most productive during January and February, but after that… hey, our holiday park opens again and I’ll be off to the van!

Do you think the pandemic has impacted your book sales, Stevie? Amazon had a lot of free book offers during the pandemic, especially for children, so I believe it did impact mine. I am writing up my post now.

I’ve sold more this year as I’ve been doing many Book Funnel promotions. Without them I don’t think I would have sold many.

More lockdown. But I’m with you. I write when I write, what I write and the news of Covid is more distracting than the reality of it. So we stay inside, do what we do. It hasn’t made it any more or less difficult to write, only to go to the grocery store!

I’ve been going to work during this lockdown, whereas I stayed at home during the first one. I don’t think people are treating this lockdown very seriously the second time around. All non-essential shops are open around our local area. The Government have given up trying to fine people £10,000, as they appeal through the courts and end up eventually paying a pittance according to their means.

I miss getting out of the house and into the local mountains, but I’m not sure what they will be like next spring. Some of my favorite places were affected by large forest fires. (which are still burning- we need a couple of good snows for them to be put out completely.)

It did not stop me writing, but luckily I was not writing a novel set in the present. Any modern novels would have to be set pre or post Covid because everything has changed. One flash fiction set in real time has turned into regular tiny tales as circumstances change each week. Perhaps my characters will find themselves in a novel. For those who like science fiction life has become stranger!
