Good afternoon. Today’s Bloganuary topic is as follows:
What is your favourite quote, and why?
I think it has to be the one by Oscar Wilde, as I tend to favour inspirational quotes:
‘We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars’
This was not spoken by Oscar himself, but instead by one of his characters, Lord Darlington, in Act III of Oscar’s play ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’. Lord Darlington was speaking about men in general and their treatment of women; how some men cannot be trusted, but appear charming/honest on the surface.
Yes indeed, some men cannot be trusted as far as you could throw them. However, I like to interpret this quote as inspirational/motivational
in nature; we can rise from a bad start in life or from some misfortune and achieve great things if we are sufficiently motivated to do so. It’s all up to the individual, as indeed … life is what you make it.
Here’s a couple of others I love:
‘Even this will pass’.
“The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” (L.P Hartley).
There are too many – “To see we must forget the name of the thing we are looking at.”- Claude Monet.

I love that quote. I try and slip it in to stem the negative flow of a gossip, gossiping!

I enjoyed your quote, Stevie. Here is one I like from War and Peace: “In the best, the friendliest and simplest relations flattery or praise is necessary, just as grease is necessary to keep wheels turning. ”
― Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

I like that quote too. Oscar Wilde had some awesome quotes. Although not from Oscar Wilde, this is my favourite quote: “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”― Maya Angelou

How about his “In this world, there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” 🙂

Indeed. What does one do after that?
