Jim’s challenge is to play a song by a band who never made it to No. 1. My choice would be my favourite band of my youth , Be Bop Deluxe. Their song ‘Ships in the Night‘ from their album ‘Sunburst Finish’ kind of sums up my gawky teenage years, and it peaked at number 23 in the charts in February 1976. I had a huge crush on Bill Nelson, and he without doubt is still one of the most underrated guitarists ever.

My best friend and I spent many a happy hour at Hammersmith Odeon when BBDL were touring.

Here are some of the lyrics of ‘Ships in the Night‘, courtesy of Genius.com:

Like a square peg in a round hole
Like a harp without it’s strings
Like a sailor who sails no oceans
Like a bird that has no wings
Without love, I am a desert
Without love, My light is dim
Without love, I have no treasures
Without love, I cannot win
(without love) . . . We are like ships in the night
(without love) . . . Selling our souls down the river
Sailing away and forever our pleasure is blue.
