Authors can share their short stories (less than 2000 words please) or poetry, and it won’t cost you a penny! The deadline this month is 27th November. Stories or poems can be on any subject, but please keep them reasonably family friendly. On 29th November I will pick a winner and runner up and share the links in my newsletter and on my Facebook and Twitter pages. Please ensure that you add your story to this current month’s submission page and not any previous month, or it may be missed.
I look forward to reading your efforts. The winner and runner up will receive these laurels to add to their story:
Here’s a poem for those of you who have ever been on a long car journey with small children:
ARE WE THERE YET? BY STEVIE TURNER
Four hours in a car with two little grandsons,
But we’ve played this game before.
Mummy gives us their DVD players,
To make it a bit less of a chore.
Their daddy and his little brother
Hated long journeys as well,
They’d play thumb wars on the back seat,
Shout, punch each other, and yell.
“You get in the front, and you stay in the back!”
I’d shout at the top of my voice.
I would have preferred to go somewhere on my own,
If I’d been given the choice.
They’d always listen to a Postman Pat tape,
But after the twenty first repeat,
It kind of grates upon the nerves,
And makes you fidgety in your seat.
“Are we there yet?” would come the question,
And I’d look around and say “Don’t! –
When we get there we’ll be there,
And until then we won’t.”
“But I’m bored!” would come the cry,
And a foot would kick his brother,
“He kicked me!” A voice would whine,
“I hate him!” Yelled the other.
Tension in the car would rise,
And Sam would drive much faster,
I’d shut my eyes so I wouldn’t see
Any impending disaster.
Then at last we arrive,
And the sun comes out to play,
Two little boys spring from their cage,
To fight and kill all bloody day.

Hi, unfortunately this went to my spam filter and I’ve only just seen it. Yes the deadline had passed, so please submit again in January, as December’s theme is for Christmas poetry (unless you want to submit a poem!).

Hi Stevie
This one is prompted by your comment about the sort of party in Port Naain where people throw their chariot keys onto the table 😉
Well there’s no chariots, just Sedan chairs

I can imagine the last two lines but never experienced it. My daughter is the only child. I was used to the fighting with my siblings as a kid. My brother threw a comb (made with cow bone) at me when I was yelling at him. It broke my front tooth!! It’s good for ids to learn to fight with and love each other. They make better people in the long run. I’ll be back, Stevie!

Thanks Miriam. Our neighbours’ boys fought a lot, and one ended up poking out the other one’s eye with a stick. Thank goodness my two weren’t that bad.

Yes, it’s good that your boys are fighting gently!! When they get to be at a certain age, the physical fight is less fun for them.

Both my daughter and her husband are the only child in the families. They plan to have at least one more.

It’s best, I think. I was an only child, and you notice the difference at my age.

I’m the 7th among 13 kids, but my mom and dad got married when they were 15 and 16. My mom started having kids. She lost 5 out of 6 of my older siblings during WWII. I have one older sister.

Wow. Married at 15? She was still a child!

That was how it worked back then. Families matched their kids for marriages.

Oh does that bring back memories, or should I say nightmares? I once drove from my apartment in New York City back to my old neighborhood in southern California. Myself and my four children range 9 years down to 14 months. I plead temporary insanity… 😉

It was a bit of a challenge, me, the kids in a tiny old VW beetle…

Challenge? That trip deserves another. A trip to the thesaurus for a much larger word!. I ahve several coloquialisms, most of them not printable. Sheesh.

It was an adventure. Every time I stopped for gas I had to pull out the back seat to check the water in the battery. That meant pulling all the kids out of the car…
