Welcome to another blog hop. This week the topic is:
What’s on your writer’s wish list? List 5 things you have been wanting to buy or try as a writer.
There are some things I’d like to try/buy, but they all cost money. At the moment I’m happy with my trusty computer and in these days of high prices and high inflation I’d rather not spend any more money than I need to. However, if I had more disposable income I’d try these:
- Amazon ads: Ever since Amazon stopped advertising Indie books for free my monthly sales have reduced somewhat. No worries… I’ll put up with that as I only write for a hobby and not to pay the bills.
- Mailchimp’s Standard Package: It’s about £30 per month (others cost more), but then I’d be able to send emails to all the subscribers on my list (1500) and not just around 170. No worries… the 1330 subscribers who aren’t getting emails are probably breathing a sigh of relief.
- I’d pay for somebody to format my books and book cover for Ingram Spark: Again this costs money, and it also costs money to publish on Ingram Spark too. No worries… I just don’t add any more books to the ones that are already on there and publish on Amazon for free instead.
- Ingram Spark’s Catalogue: More money needed (last time I used it the price was around £85 per book), but unfortunately your book will only stay in their catalogue for a few months anyway. No worries…
- Bookbub: Far too much money!

HI Stevie, these are all interesting marketing points/tools you have raised. I am also being wary of where I spend money for book marketing as most ventures I have tried outside of my own social media and social circles haven’t been hugely successful. I just keep plodding along and am now doing more fun things like entering writing competitions.

Me too. Just make sure the writing competitions are genuine and not just set up by marketing companies eager to take your money.

As usual, I’m with you. Except, I pay for covers and formatting. Just a no for me. Lol ❤

I pay for covers, but need to pay again for a cover and formatting for Ingram. However, when your book comes out of the catalogue after a couple of months then there’s not many sales after that and so it’s not really worth paying out for these. x

So you have to give Ingram a separate cover? Ouch! x

Yes, it has to be specially formatted. I’ve not published any more books with them this year. Every year they put their printing prices up, and you have to keep on increasing the price of your books so that you actually receive some royalties and don’t end up paying them instead. x

It’s sort of funny/sad – if we had a million dollars (or pounds) we could afford to publish and promote our books.

It feels like a vicious circle, you need sales to pay for promotion, but without promotion, you get few sales. I regard the whole thing as a hobby, spending only on the things that enhance my enjoyment of the creative process, sales are a nice bonus.

Absolutely – that’s the best way to look at it. Writing is a hobby for sure, and any sales are a bonus.
