The deal with content writing is that so far as I’ve found, as the saying goes, “It don’t pay shit.” Unless there’s some outfit out there I need to know about. 400 words. Between 3 and 5 cents US. That’s $12-$15. Which is why when you read a lot of that stuff it’s awful. I used to write owner’s manual’s and user guides, It’s not rocket science, it’s edit to bone and make sense. So regardless of how competent one is there’s more money running a cash register at the grocery store than in content. Unless someone out there is making it worth the effort.

Thanks Nicholas. So it’s your freelance writing rather than your books which earns you money? I was just making the point that self-published authors don’t usually earn enough money to live on. We usually have a day job as well.

Oh, I see! I thought the point is that it’s impossible to make any money writing. Apologies for the confusion. You’re right, it’s pretty hard to make a living through fiction writing, whether trad- or self-published. In fact, I make more from my self-published books than from my trad-published ones.
