I cannot help but notice that one of the latest promotion strategies to win more readers to your blog site is to use your own blog as a base for other authors to write guest posts on. There seems to be a sudden surge lately in authors inviting fellow scribblers to compose a family friendly blog for their site. I’m sure it is the way forward to gain more readers, but I have a bit of a warped sense of humour, and my mind has gone into overdrive. I’ve started to imagine some kind of frantic blog-go-round, where we all send posts off through the ether that we would have written on our own pages, but now they have to appear on somebody else’s blog instead. Blogs fly in from cyberland, taking up residence where our own posts should be.
While I’m awaiting guest post invites from my cyber friends, this whole scenario has caused me to trundle through my back catalogue and check the content of the most popular blogs I have written over the past year. I thought it would be a good idea to cut to the chase and find out which type of blog I’d like authors to blog-go-round with on my own WordPress site.
With it so far? Ha ha! What I’ve come up with is surprising to say the least, because I’ve found out that readers on the whole aren’t too bothered about who has got a book for sale, or even what their new book is about. No, my dears, fasten your seat belts on the blog-go-round and have a gander below:

So you see that the most popular posts seem to be blogs that are about the lives of authors, not about their books. Therefore in this 2017 blog-go-round if any authors would like to write a funny, heartwarming or poignant post about events in their lives for a guest post on my blog-go-round, then please send it to stevie@stevie-turner-author.co.uk. Don’t forget – IT’S NOT ABOUT YOUR BOOK, IT’S ABOUT YOU (you’re allowed to add a link to your Amazon author page though)!

I agree with you Stevie. Sure as authors we like to share a good review occasionally, or when our book is on promo, but people like to know about people when it comes down to it. I’d love to come visit in the spring with a post as I’m about to endeavor on to my blogging vacay after next week. 🙂

Of course, I’d love to publish your guest post! I look forward to reading it. I’m off on a blogging holiday soon as well, as we’re off to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras. Going to have a blog-free fortnight and recharge my batteries.

Yay for us! That sounds like so much fun! Just think of the stories we’ll have to share of our adventures after a good reboot! 🙂

And people thought this old Ape was daft 🤡 when he insisted that authors write about themselves in their Introductory posts, rather than their books, on his blog 😄😄😄

I seem to use up all my inspirations keeping my own blog supplied with posts. A guest post on someone else’s blog would have to be superior, so somehow I never get around to writing it.

Agreed! The blogosphere is over-saturated with books begging for reviews or ‘buy this book’. My current and bigger pet peeve are “Sign up for my Newsletter’ which you can’t always turn off. Because of those, I don’t leave comments–would have been positive ones.

I just had a look at my own stats. The most viewed post in 2016 was an interview I conducted with a friend who is an environmental activist. It received more views than the next 3 combined. They were: a post about a local radio employee’s fund-raising for a specialised facility at a Dublin hospital, a post about brexit and an extract from my historical novel Strongbow’s Wife. I think the value of guest posts (or interviews) is their ability to increase your reach to include the guest’s followers. Whether they stick around depends on how attractive your own posts are to them.

Hi Frank. Can you send me the link to that one please? I think I must have missed it.

I think people are more interested in the authors than in their books. Everyone has a book or twelve to flog, and the market is beyond saturated. Guest blogs which are not about books will attract more readers. I see this with my own blogs.

I know exactly what you mean, Stevie, for if I get one more email flogging yet another book from a complete stranger, I think I will lose the plot…
It’s getting very confusing though, you never know what to do for the best…
